4 December 2007

This is the first day of the second I-TASC Antarctic expedition known as the Systems Installation Testing Expedition (SITE) codenamed Umthombo Womlilo, my team partner named Siphiwe (Ngwenya) and I Ntsikelelo Ntshingila (1st Born) had to make our own rushing and planning in the morning and cover up some late errands of which miraculously we had it covered and we were right on time to board the S.A Agulhas heading for South African National Antarctic Expedition Base 4 in Antarctica. 11:55 am was our arrival time at the Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism at Waterfront Cape Town which is the point of departure for the ship and the first people I see are lot of people with video cameras who looked like they are TV journalists. We were given cabin number 15 which has four bunk beds, we were allocated with one person who is from another team named M. Salmani,we call him by his surname Salmani. We were intended to leave the harbor and start sailing at 2:00 pm but we got to leave at harbor 4:14pm, hey it's 11:00pm and we are about 3km from the Cape Town Harbor. We can see the light and the Mother City always looks beautiful even at night. We were so hungry as none of us had breakfast. This time we had the fire drill earlier than last year's expedition just an hour an a half after leaving the harbor and it lasted for about 45 minutes. We had our first dinner at the ship at 6:30pm and I must say as probably the only vegetarian on the boat the food was tight! After dinner Siphiwe and I decided to head for the gym and burn some calories and got us done for the day. He actually vomited on my face as he was sea sick and the heat from his body drove him mad cause I made him work out like a weight lifting freak. The time is now 11:32 pm and I'm writing the diary looking still at the glowing Mother City from inside the cabin. I'm signing off as I have consumed the day in words until the present moment therefore nothing more to consume but wait for the time to pass to take you through another day of the expedition peace!
